The Function of Functionality
If the design of a destination does not meet the needs of the users from a functional standpoint, it has failed in its most primary requirement, that of adequately serving and providing for the needs of its users. All else is of little or no practical value or meaning. Functionality requites a deep understanding and consideration of the user and those who service the project. It exists to faithfully serve in the background, unnoticed by the guest. A resort is one of the most difficult projects to design well from a functional standpoint. It has all the requirements of a small city within the confines of a fraction of the area. Good functionality serves as the bridge between architecture and service. To the extent that architectural design functions well, it assists the resort staff in catering to the needs and wants of the guests. If the design is deficient from a functional standpoint, the quality of service will suffer. As resorts continue to strive to surpass each other for top ranking and popularity, the level of attention and quality of service offered to their guests will become an increasingly important factor in a guest's decision on which resort to visit. A design that functions well is a key ingredient in creating a successful destination.
